Quote of the Day: Rafa on Rog

I believe I'm sincere and in the end we have a sufficiently good relationship that we don't get upset with each other when things come out in the press. If Federer told me I was the best, I would love it, I would be happy.

- Rafael Nadal on his relationship with Roger Federer

I honestly wonder what it would take for Fed to call Rafa "the best".

What do you guys think? Do tell!

  1. Roger would probably never utter those words! Unless...... Rafa holds his no.1 position for a whole decade! ahahaha.......

  2. When pigs sprout wings and fly over Centre Court holding a sign that reads, "Come on Roger, how about now?" Only then will Roger admit it.

  3. yeah sorry to say it, but i don't think rog would ever say anything other than "he's the current world no. 1."

  4. Serena Williams when asked who was the favourite to win a tournament or who was the best player, her response was: "I could never pick someone else to win a tournament or say that someone else was better than I was. I am a professional tennis player. This is what I do. As long as I am playing this sport I am the best, whether I am ranked No. 1 or No. 100". So in response to that question, Roger's response would be - the best, surely you are speaking about me.

  5. I can't really picture Fed saying it. EVER!
Maybe if someone threatened to burn his cardigan though...

On a different note: I can't stand they way edit Rafa's interview to make it seem that his English were better. It's not perfect, but who cares?
I mean, do you really want to make me believe that Rafa said "sufficiently"??
That a little bit of an illusion, no? ;)

  6. The quoted article is actually an English translation of his postmatch press conference, held entirely in Spanish.

Rafa is rather eloquent in Spanish, you would be surprised.

  7. Of course Fed would say it, he might be newly retired, but he'd say it then. :)

  8. Yeah I was under the impression that the press conference was conducted in Spanish and they translated it. It's always easier to express yourself in your own language (though as a side note I think Rafa does great with his English considering he's just "picked it up" as a result of being on the tour for so long)...anyways I've heard before that Rafa is quite a beautiful, articulate speaker. Makes me want to learn Spanish!! :)

  9. i am a HUGE fed fan, but even i would admit that he would never say it. i am not thrilled with fed's approach, i think it is important to appreciate other players even if fed himself actually still thinks he might be the best. I would say however, that rafa's constant praise of other players (specifically federer) is also somewhat two sided. i played pro tennis for a long time, and trained at the sanchez academy in barcelona. i know a number of people who know rafa personally, and he does believe himself to be the best, it just that he chooses to demonstrate himself in a little bit of a different light publicly. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, i guess fed just speaks what's exactly on his mind while rafa chooses to filter it a little more. i think it only makes them more interesting as players, they are so different, yet both so great for the sport.

  10. I dont think its the right attitude to ever say anyone other than yourself if the best player out there. Look at Venus and Serena they believe they are the best and would never say that somebody is better than them. I think Roger has to continue to believe he is the best of he wants to get back to being the best.

  11. This was Nadal's answer to a question if his statements at AO ceremony to Roger could be considered condescending (Nadal said Federer was the best after defeating him)

As brilliant as Nadal has been, particularly since last year, the fact is Nadal has been number one for just six months. Federer and his fans have every right to wait at least till the end of this year to see if Nadal will hold-up to the inevitable challenges from other players (which looking at his current form looks more than likely).

But there is no doubt that Federer thinks very highly of Nadal.

  12. HAHA Fed would never EVER say that. However, it doesn't change the fact that it's true.

  13. Rafa,
You will never hear that from Roger. But...If I tell you you are the best, will you be happy?
*prepares to fly to Spain, assume the Rafa-with-physio-position, and find out*

Federer's ego could never admit the truth, hence why he will always lose to King Rafa.

    Vamos Rafa!

  15. It isn´t about Rogers ego, I am afraid, Rafa is showing more and more that he really believes himself to be the best and desires nothing more then for Roger to agree with that.
Well unfortunately not that many people agree with that, yet, at least. He has some years to be number one in front of him, for anyone to do that, Roger most of all. So good luck Rafa, you will need that and to change your style of tennis, otherwise you will either get caugth up by the young guns or just by your more regular injuries.
For me personally Rafa´s tennis style will never mean him being the best (he just bores me after few games, his trainigs are even more boring), we have already had the pleasure of watching the perfect tennis technician for the last few years, haven´we?

  18. Amazing how we can all watch tennis with such different eyes. I find Fed to be a great tennis player but I find him dull and boring. I stopped watching tennis...the Pete and Roger show bored me to death. Rafa sparked my interest again, he's full of life on and off the court and he has a heart of gold. I only wish the best for Fed but it's time for a change.
Fed would NEVER tell Rafa that he's the best and he doesn't need to. Rafa's record will speak for itself.
