Quotes of the Day: Ana vs. Amelie

I didn't have much time to recover ... and I didn't have the energy to dig deep again.

- Ana Ivanovic on the quick turnaround from her last match

HUH?! I guess it's time to question your fitness regime Ana. You're a former No.1 and current Roland Garros champ and you couldn't dig deep and find a way to win? Get a grip.

******************************

I'm very proud of the way I played today from the first one to the last.

- Amelie Mauresmo on defeating Ana

You should be Amelie! Good for you. Now go wreak havoc on these lady ballers before your clock runs out (if you can keep it together that is - and I have my doubts.)

  1. Ana's also suffering from a stomach virus, so that added to her lackluster play.

Feel free to make the requisite "morning sickness" joke.

  2. I'm not going to make a "morning sickness" joke since it wasn't morning actually :), and with all the sweat that was pouring off of her, I'd go with just a stomach virus. Heavy sweating reminded me of her look in Doha, but I've been hoping it was nothing similar :(

  3. She was indeed sweating a bit too much. There are pictures of her hitting a forehand and a backhand and the sweat was going all over the court in drips..

But that doesn't excuse Ana for the fact that she played as brainless as ever. And everytime she has a tough match now we can count on her losing the next, as she never seems to have enough energy to bounce back for the following round.

    Ana needs a coach ASAP.

Amelie played a great match, showcasing her talent. So she really should be proud. I'm not sure she will keep that up though.

  4. Hooray for Amelie!
Although I echo everyone else's sentiments about her continuing on this path.

  5. Yeah she couldn't recover from the previous night with hung like a horse Fernando!

  6. uh oh, stomach virus again? thinking about "morning sickness" jokes makes me shudder, ugh. but she really looked tired, seems that she spent all of her energy in her 2nd round match.

but kudos to momo. she played exceptionally well. it was like the momo from 4 years ago.

  7. i remembered something, this is ana's third time to suffer from a stomach virus. the first one was during the fed cup (againts croatia), then doha and now brisbane.

  8. ok - so she had a stomach "thing" and some other girls are sick. fine - we can give her a slight pass.

but seriously guys, she's 21 coming from the off season playing only her THIRD match of the season. where's the grit and fight? i don't know, sounds like it's an excuse.

if you can go out there then you're saying you're ready to play - sick or not. to use it as a part of the reason for your loss is pretty crappy.

    coach...needed...stat...

  9. Sorry, but Ana's not the type of player to excuse a loss solely on illness. She fully gave credit to Amelie and watching the match, you could tell she was fighting for everything even though something was pretty wrong with her. She even tried to execute her Plan B by coming into net but Amelie just played a beautifully flawless game that would've troubled Ana even on her best of days, and many other players as well.

I agree that she needs a coach but I can understand why she and Sven parted - he needs to be able to focus on the other Adidas players and she needs someone who can focus on just her. Besides, after a few years, maybe they'd gotten all they could out of the arrangement. I just think it's way too early in the season to be calling for Ana's head.

  10. rich: i'm quite impressed with the fighting spirit that ana showed in her second match (against vinci). she was playing like crap in the first set and then had to save two match points to survive the match. that's fighting spirit in my book. after her quarterfinal loss to momo, she totally gave her (momo) credit for the win. ana was just completely outplayed. momo did not give her an opportunity to come back in the match. it would have been much, much more surprising if ana lost to kvitova in the 1st round. nole, in comparison, tanked his match against gulbis, did not show any fighting spirit at all and even blamed his new racquet for the loss. i like him a lot (i'm a big fan of the serbs) but that excuse was totally classless for me.

  11. I am so sick of the Ana haters always attacking Ana. She was sick and she wasn't making excuses. And enough with the Fernando jokes already. They're getting old. She really needs to play better but I am sick of all the nitpicking. Poor Ana, just too many idiots want to kick the sweet girl around. I am sick of it.

  12. I love Amelie and would love to see a comeback!

  13. I love Amelie too. I have the worst girl crush on her. :/

Wow. The comment from Ana is very disturbing. No energy? Get off your pity party!!

What is up with the serbians? It's like they rise, almost to the top, and just can't keep it together. I LOVE their game when they are playing heart soul and mind, but this is killing me.

Curtis, we are not attacking Ana. Some of use truly do love her. But losing all these matches, she's not making it easy is she? And about the jokes.. well. That is what you get from "celebrity" relationships. Besides, we make Rafa butt jokes, bitchy Federer jokes, JJ drama queen jokes.. I suppose as a fan of Ana you should just suck it up, like the rest of us suck it up when our favorites are being made fun of.

  14. Curtis: Is that really you Ana? I like her I just don't get all the hype. Maybe she'll prove me and all the supposed "haters" wrong. But I never said she was the next Kournikova - how could she be? She's won A title but can't pose worth crap - that's so the opposite of Anna.

As for Anando, they enjoyed being in the spotlight, posing for the paps, being in our face so I guess they should accept a little ribbing here and there. It works both ways - they get PR and we get material to gawk over. I don't see the problem.

People should lighten up and relax - it's just tennis. Not curing cancer here.

  15. Ana needs to find a new coach. She's being playing badly for what? 8 months now? She also needs to check with a doctor about her stomach problems. She's been getting sick a lot don't you think? She just needs a bit more time, look at sharapova and Serena. It took them time also to get to where they are tight now and to win their second slam.

And to Curtis, don't be so uptight. Not everybody is in love with Ana, get used to it. Ana isn't the only player who gets slammed for things. Oh please, ana isn't even getting the same amount of hate that the Williamses, Jankovic or even Sharapova gets.

  16. Wait...I totally thought this was a cancer blog.

    NOW it all makes sense.
