PHOTO OP: Amelie back to her old ways in Queensland

Same old song for Amelie Mauresmo.

The 2-time Grand Slammer, who shocked top seed Ana Ivanovic in Queensland yesterday, was unable to build on the momentum today. Down 0-4 in the first set, she was forced out of her semifinal against compatriot Marion Bartoli with back and leg problems. In the final, Bart will face Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who has yet to yield a set this week.

After feeling the initial pain, Amelie erred on the side of caution with the Aussie Open a little over a week away:

It happened in the second game. It wasn't such a big pain so I kept going but I couldn't really push off the serve and move the way I wanted.

It's frustrating and not how you want to end the tournament but I guess it's more sensible to make sure I'm 100 per cent for Melbourne (the Australian Open).
So, anyone surprised at Amelie's mid-match retirement?

If I comment, will that disturb the deafening silence?

  2. Commenting to break the silence, cause I absolutely love Amelie... And she did well till today.
    *sigh*
Well, come on then, for the Aussie Open.

  3. She did well this week. I'm not sure why it's listed as a "shock" that she beat Ana since she owns her. Anyway, coming from the longest match of her career to saving match points and watching her struggle with her movement against Bartoli .. no, I'm not surprised at her retirement in that match.

  4. babz: *shouts "crap!"*

steph: i love her too which is why it's so disappointing she got injured. oh well - there's always melbourne.

pamela: she did do well and hopefully it'll give her confidence where she's been lacking it. well, based on recent form and results it was an upset - ana was the fave going into the match.

it's disheartening to see injury withdrawals so soon in the season but maybe it was more preventative than anything else.

  5. Rich: I think it was preventative. Amelie is one of the ladies I like to watch. I had a thought, it doesn't happen often so take note lol

Have you ever considered putting a spot on your blog that is dedicated to links to watch matches?

I'm watching the Fed vs Murray match right now, and it came to mind.

  6. I'm kind of surprised because how can someone that looks so fit be SO fragile? What will she be like as the season rolls on? Will she even make it to the end?

  7. pamela: i remember back in the day, before she won her slams, she used to get injured constantly. here's the scenario: she'd come into a slam full of confidence with a title or two under her belt, she'd blow through the draw and then *BAM!* she'd withdraw with injury. it's was her M.O.

let me think about the other suggestion!

van: i'm a big believer in the mind-body connection. i think a lot of injuries are caused by tension in the head: a baller is tense in the head and this tension manifests in the body and then injuries can happen - not all, but it can happen that way. i think that's the case with amelie.

i know she worked with a sports psych so i'm thinking this is might either be from just playing hard or preventative. at least i'm HOPING so!

  13. babz: why of course! so hypothetically speaking (very hypo) if i were into girls, i might be into amelie. she'd wine me, take me skiing, and all sorts of stuff. plus she's prob a take charge kinda girl off-court which i wouldn't mind (at least some of the time).

*bumps natch from therepy session couch*

davians: i'm not sure what the problem is you're asking about. are you saying the post isn't showing up, the images, etc.? and where??

  14. Rich: Okay, yeah. Melbourne, since she's pulled out from Sydney. Come ON, Amelie. Please. And I NEVER say please.
