Sloane Stephens and the art of the magazine interview

Sloane Stephens is featured in the August issue of Elle magazine in an article that asks, "Is Sloane Stephens the Future of American Tennis?" It's a profile piece on the 21-year old they dubbed the "newly anointed princess of American tennis." Fair enough. Amongst the crop of female upstarts in the US, including Madison Keys, CoCo Vendeweghe, Lauren Davis, and Grace Min, Sloane is the only one to have broken through at the majors (reaching the second week six straight times at one point) and to have defeated Serena Williams. The article, however, is far from fairy-tale stuff. If the goal of the interview was to enhance Sloane’s public persona and engender her to a mainstream audience, she may have lost the plot.

From the beginning, it’s obvious the writer was thrown for a loop once she meets Sloane in the flesh.
“I’m at some level expecting Grace Kelly; instead, I get Cher Horowitz.”
So there’s the set up. The article continues and, at one point, Sloane discusses a visit to her gynecologist, who happens also to be a tennis fan.
“I saw my gyno today, and she’s like, ‘I can’t wait for Indian Wells,’ ” Stephens says. Indian Wells, for the uninitiated, is a major tennis tournament in Southern California in March, and Stephens’ doctor, it seems, is also one of her ardent fans. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! She’s looking in my vajay!’”
Overshare much? Not quite the image you may have had of Sloane, or wanted for that matter. Later, she pays a visit to the offices of Lagardère Unlimited, her management company. After complaining about the trek to get there (yes, LA traffic is notoriously horrific), she and the writer arrive for a session of autographing items for a USTA kids’ day event. Sloane signs a batch of visors and signals that she’s had enough.
“I’m not signing those wristbands, I hope you know,” she announces, breaking the awkward silence that has settled over the room. Soon, Stephens declares she’s done. “I’m not signing any more. There’s not that many kids in the world.”
Gruff. She also manages to pack in references to Caroline Wozniacki, Khloe Kardashian, Katy Perry, and Beyonce in the piece. They’re all reminders that, after all, she’s only 21-years old.

There’s been plenty of criticism online towards Sloane for the things that were said in this article; and some of it is deserved. She comes across at times like the stereotypically spoiled athlete who can’t pump her own gas or who won’t sign enough wristbands. Rather than consider the fact that she might be missing out on something important like a formal education, she’d prefer to take a nap. Not major offenses, but certainly immature. But, how many stupid things did I say when I was 21 that I wish I could take back? There are plenty. Lucky for me, though, they’re not in print (unless you count my journals…and you can’t).

It was only last year that Serena made controversial remarks in Rolling Stone magazine about the Steubenville rape case (MUCH worse) along with catty musings allegedly referring to Maria Sharapova. She made the obligatory public apology and vowed to do better. ReRe has been in the media glare going on 15 years and she was still caught off guard by some of things she said that ended up being published. It’s a continual learning process even for a veteran.

There’s definitely something about her penchant for oversharing that feels generational. She’s part of an age group that has grown up with social media, where oversharing has become normalized and habitual. And it doesn’t end online. If you know anyone of that generation, you’ll see that their first instinct once something happens in their lives – good, bad, whatever – is to share it with their friends and “friends.” It’s a way of connecting and belonging, and it doesn’t change just because someone is famous. The oversharing also feels compulsive and, as the writer put it, an “unconscious ploy to put people at a distance, to keep expectations low.” With all that Sloane’s been through in her personal life (as detailed in the article), it shouldn’t be a surprise that her best offense is a strong defense.

As the public, we want our athletes to be “real”, to be heroic, and to tell us what they think. We seek them out on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with what they’re doing on a daily basis. We follow them on Instagram hoping for a genuine snapshot of their lives, only to find out that what we’re seeing is both literally and figuratively filtered. We don’t really want to know that they’d rather not autograph every single freebie because they happen to be in a mood (I MEAN, IT’S FOR THE KIDS!!). They owe us, the fans, a genuine effort and an appreciation for the position they worked hard to achieve.

Maybe having a veil over what they really think and feel is a good idea after all.

Nolena take cover

Novak Djokovic + Jelena Ristic are featured on the cover and inside the newest edition of Serbian Hello! magazine. The world's top baller and his WAG are looking all kinds of good in this spread. My fave? Croquet Nole. MUST have those shoes. In fact, I need the whole outfit, with or without him in it. I'm not picky.

PHOTO OP: Djokovic does Vogue

Perhaps Anna Wintour preferred Novak Djokovic in a speedo over Roger Federer. Good call.

One more shot of Nole after the jump.

So, can you guess the identity of the soaking wet chorizo with the chiseled abs? If you can't, don't worry. Here's a clue: He and a few of his shirtless friends took part in a fun and frolicky photoshoot for Glamour España Magazine. Still stumped? Then lick, er, click the head to see the big reveal after the jump. Oops, my bad.

BREAKING NEWS: Fernando Verdasco has his shirt on (for GQ!)

Just a quick note to Down the Line! readers: Posting may be slow to non-existent for the next few days as I prepare for my LP, Kalil's, 4.0 Birthday Bash at our spot in Brooklyn, NY. It's a full-on black + white themed PAWTY with his BFF DJing out back. So, suffice it to say, I have my mitts full with preparations and set up.

I'm totally psyched for next week, though, and should be able to provide you guys some great coverage from a few of the major pre-US Open events as well as some from the qualies (I might pop in mid-week and maybe over the weekend.) So make sure to follow me on Twitter @RawUncutTennis by clicking here and/or follow on Facebook here.

In the meantime I leave you an actually fully-clothed *sad face* Fernando Verdasco who seems more at home in this September GQ spread shot in the Madrid-Barajas' Terminal 4 than Andy Murray does in Vogue. Or maybe I'm just favoring the Spanish chorizo's thigh-busting beauty and then some in these high-fashion shots (no really, check out the total package in the very bottom right photo. Calvin Klein knows what's up.)

Thanks as always to the almighty @julesdc for the tip off!

"'The stuff was really nice. Really, really nice.' I urge him to expand on 'nice'—like, what was nice about the tux he’d had on? He says it had a darker stripe down the side of the leg."

Andy Murray, looking hella handsome in Burberry, is featured in the September issue of Vogue.

PHOTO OP: Sometimes there are one too many balls (it's the End Times)

Yen-Hsun Lu, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this season, styles out on the August cover of Taiwanese GQ. But, wait! I'm smelling a theme here:

Ana Ivanovic - Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, February 2010

Anna Kournikova - K-Swiss ad, March 2009

It's awesome to have a boy baller finally pushed into a vat of balls while giving his best puss face (though I'm glad they passed on the tini-wini bikini.) But why do these art directors keep pushing this concept? It's a bit done now. I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm the last one to complain about lying on a bed of balls and having them shoved in your face, onto your back and up your arm pit. That's a relaxing weekend for me.

But enough is enough.

Check out more images of Rendy Lu in Taiwanese GQ over at HCFoo's Tennis Blog and thanks to Brodie over at Mind the Racket for the tip off!

(UPDATED) Federer featured on ESPN The Magazine cover, but don't tell Sports Illustrated

So Sports Illustrated's won't ever give Roger Federer the Sportsman of the Year Award and cover for his historic achievements in tennis but ESPN The Magazine will put his big, finely coiffed mug on their May 3 cover with the headline, "WHO'S THE WORLD'S GREATEST ATHLETE? ROGER FEDERER LOOKS THE PART."

Good on ya.

Here's some behind-the-scenes footage of Rafael Nadal's SOBeFit photoshoot. This is a nice tease but I think we're all waiting for the same thing: Gypsy. Am I right or am I right?!

Bring it Shak.

PHOTO OP: Serena joined by Tyra at Glamour Women of the Year Awards

Serena Williams was spotted on the grey (?) carpet with Tyra Banks at the 2009 Glamour Women of the Year Awards held at Carnegie Hall in New York City last night.

The 11-time Grand Slammer was honored alongside Rihanna, Maria Shriver, Stella McCartney, Amy Poehler, Marissa Mayer, Jane Aronson, Susan Rice, Euna Lee & Laura Ling, the women of Iran's One Million Signatures campaign, and Maya Angelou. A special recognition was given to First Lady of the U.S. Michelle Obama.

At least ReRe kept her clothes on for the awards ceremony. Phew.

PHOTO OP: Serena stock photo?

"I'm only getting butt-nekkid once this year kids. Grab it while you can."

Serena Williams strips down AGAIN this time as "The Athlete" and one of Glamour magazine's Women of the Year.

Billie Jean King explains why she was chosen telling the mag,
When most people would falter, she is able to raise her game a level, and that’s what you look for in champions. I feel confident she will win more major singles titles than my 12. And that makes me very proud.
Clearly this choice by the pub will be a controversial one for many especially in light of her US Open meltdown.

This photo is almost a carbon copy of her recent ESPN The Magazine cover for "The Body Issue." I find it really strange they would use a similar photo or have ReRe pose in almost exactly the same way as that cover.

So much for originality. Or clothes.

(UPDATED) PHOTO OP: Dinara Safina or Frank N. Furter? You decide.

Dinara Safina is featured in all her glorious gothness in the November issue of Russian Harper's Bazaar.

In the issue she "reveals how to become the top-seeded tennis player in the world, and what she would do if she didn’t play tennis."

Question: Why does every lady baller have to be marketed as some kind of pouty model? Dinara is one of the last ladies (next to Sveta, maybe) that I would've imagined showing up trying to sell clothes in a fashion rag. It's not her schtick and now we can all see why.

It would've been great to see a few images Dinara smiling, looking relaxed and wearing some fun, youthful fashion to go along with the article. I mean, she's only 23-years old but looks so much older here. Ugh.

WAIT! So now I'm thinking Frank N. Furter was the mag's inspiration for Dinara's styling and just in time for Halloween. Now it all makes sense. I was so wrong.

UPDATE: Dinara just retired from her round robin match against Jelena Jankovic in Doha. There are unconfirmed reports she is suffering from a back injury. She left the court in tears. Vera Zvonareva will replace D in the White Group tomorrow if she's unable to play. Of course, Serena Williams will grab the year-end ranking if she doesn't show as well. Stay tuned.

UPDATE #2: Back injury reports now confirmed. Her participation is still in doubt.

UPDATE #3: Dinara's out of the YEC and ReRe's in as year-end No.1. How very anticlimactic, but the right lady baller got the big prize in the end.

PHOTO OP: Brooklyn (almost) bares it all for GQ magazine

Andy Roddick's swimsuit-wearing WAG Brooklyn Decker is featured in the September 2009 of GQ and shows off some of her best, eh, wares.

She also discusses her tennis balling husband and how he admitted his stalking nature:

While Decker has no trouble attracting her own attention—she’s the star of four straight Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues and an upcoming show hosted by Dan Patrick—the man behind the A is husband Andy Roddick. Spotting Decker in the stands looking like the picture of all-American cool has become half the reason to watch Grand Slam tennis and yet another reason to root for the tireless if sometimes overshadowed Roddick: More Andy means more Brooklyn. This month the former high school cheerleader and class president will be riding the No. 7 train to Queens from the couple’s Manhattan apartment for the U.S. Open, where the red-hot Roddick will be gunning for a post-Wimbledon rematch against Roger Federer—and Brooklyn will get plenty of screen time.

Decker exudes supernatural supermodel poise, but there’s one topic that rattles even her: She met her husband when his agent called hers to arrange a date. “That happens all the time to girls,” Decker says, blushing a little, “but his was the one number I kept.” For their first get-together, Roddick took her to dinner, then an Upright Citizens Brigade comedy show. “He was the first to admit that he kind of stalked me,” Decker says. “But his line was ‘It’s only stalking if the other person doesn’t like it.’ ”
I guess that might be true - stalking is all in the eye of the stalkee. Plus, I'm sure A-Rod was attracted to her lovely "personalities."

But, could Brooklyn be the hawtest tennis WAG at the moment? After this shoot, I might have to say YES. You may disagree with me here, but I think we can all agree on who's the worst. Color me still stunned.

PHOTO OP: Sveta gives good face (no, seriously)

Brace yourselves peeps: meet the new and highly improved Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Roland Garros champ is featured in the August 3rd issue of PROsport magazine and she looks absolutely stunning here. I can't believe I just said that.

Anyway, check out the second pic below. Nice moves Sveta.

PHOTO OP: Nando featured in Hola! magazine

Fernando Verdasco is looking all kinds of shirtless in the latest issue of Hola! magazine.

Seriously, the bod is sick and the faux-hawk looks long gone. But sometimes Nando can look sexy and other times can be straight on cheese. I'm getting Versace ad sprinkled with a dose of International Male here. You? Though, to be fair, the styling isn't so great either.

But really you have to give Nando some props - just think about where he started.

5 black Barbies couldn't take 2 Williams sisters

Italian Vogue, who famously published their "All Black Issue" last year, is up to their old tricks.

According to Jezebel, the fashion mag has included a supplement in its July issue featuring all black Barbies. The "Shape Up" story features the lovely ladies swimming, running, and playing power groundies on what's supposed to be the prestine lawns of Wimbledon but what's probably some mini-golf course. Tough times even for Barbie.

I'm hoping they don't dive for any shots though - astroturf burn SUCKS even on plastic knees.

My fave comment from the blog's readers:

That is the most awkward tennis game I have ever seen. Why are they all up at the net? Who pushed that fifth girl to the ground? Why is the woman with the ball striking a modern dance pose? I am left with more questions than answers.

LOVE it. But seriously, these girls combined wouldn't stand a change against the Williams sisters. Look at those legs. Blow on them and they just MIGHT fall over or break in two after getting pummeled by a ReRe backhand.

Like any girl (or boy), Shrieka loves a good pearl necklace

Maria Sharapova and her box (jewelry, that is) are featured in the August U.S. edition of InStyle magazine. The 3-time Grand Slammer discusses her fave designers, pieces, and the best ways to wear 'em all.

BIG REVEAL: She and famed architect Frank Gehry have collaborated on jewelry for this year's U.S. Open!

Here's the article courtesy of MariaSharapova.com:

When Maria Sharapova famously kissed her Wimbledon trophy in 2004 after becoming the third youngest champ to win that tournament, the 17-year-old was sporting long diamond earrings and her lucky cross necklace. Life continues to sparkle for the three-time Grand Slam winner, who has very definite opinions on jewelry and exactly how to wear the many pieces she owns.

How would you describe your taste in jewelry?
Eclectic. I'm all over the place! I like what's easy to wear because my life is very casual - gold or silver pieces by Marco Bicego, John Hardy, Shamballa and David Yurman. But for a red carpet event I like to play it up and layer necklaces or wear a big pair of earrings.

Do you have a favorite gem?
A diamond - it's my birthstone. I love pearls too, but you have to wear them in the right way. I save them for special occasions.

What about costume jewelery?
I shop flea markets for it. And I love the costume pieces fashion designers create for their collections.

You've always been one of the chichest players on the tour. Every year you get more daring in your clothing designs with Nike, and you recently collaborated on jewelery with Frank Gehry for the US Open. How was that?
I've always loved architecture, plus I own, like, half of the jewelery line he does for Tiffany. So we had a great meeting: He knew the pieces had to be light and move when I moved so they wouldn't be distracting. The earrings look perfect with my tennis dress.

You're an athlete but have a serious glam side - like the diamond tiara you rocked for your 21st birthday party.
I went into Tiffany to look at jewelry and there was something really cool about it. I want to get married in one!
I cannot WAIT to see the Shrieka-Gehry collaboration. I swear, only an architect could design something big enough for the towering Russian. She's, like, HUGE.

PS - I always thought a peek into Shrieka's box would be much more interesting. Wrong-o.

VIDEO VAULT: Vika, Chaky, Alona, and Domi flash flesh for FHM

Victoria Azarenka, Anna Chakvetadze, Alona Bondarenko, and Dominika Cibulkova will be appearing in the August issue of lad rag FHM and here's some behind-the-scenes footage of the shoots.

Nice spreads ladies. But questions: what's up with Chaky's bangs? You could sweep a floor with them. And obvs, this is a boy's mag and all but don't Vika + Chaky look like they're about to swap spit?

Shrieka takes charge at ESPN the Magazine, spews advice to one and all

The issue of ESPN The Magazine featuring Maria Sharapova as Guest Editor is out and it features the Russian baller in various states of dress + undress happily handing out advice to the tennis gods and fellow athletes on everything from how to improve the sport to how to wear nail polish correctly (that would be for wrestler Chuck Liddell - love it.)

Guess who Shrieka might be talking about when she rattled off these two recommendations for improving tennis. I have my guesses:

3.Get rid of the riffraff
And while I'm on the subject: The players' lounge isn't a nightclub, either. It's hard to get ready for a match when there's a bleached-out blonde in six-inch stilettos and a denim miniskirt hanging out. Who is this person, and why is she here?

Marat, leave the hookers at home. Geez.

8.Don't hide the game face
While I was sidelined with my shoulder injury, I watched a lot of tennis on TV. Sometimes I thought, Why do these girls wear so much makeup? I can't even figure out how they keep their eyeliner from running. Athletes should play au naturel.

JJ, maybe showing off your "real" game face might actually scare opponents and win you matches. Try it. Your game could us all the help it can get right now.

And for all you male straighties out there (I know there are one or two, right?) Shrieka let's us in on what this kind of woman wants in her man:

Q.What does a woman of your caliber look for in a man? -- Daniel Gibson, Cavaliers
A.Although you may think I live a glamorous life, I'm pretty simple. Little things make me happy. I love to laugh. I love going to dinner or to a comedy club. I like guys who are polite and quirky. Oh, and you have to be tall.

Like, skyscraper tall.

Read more of her articles and see more pictures over at MariaSharapova.com.
