+ NETCORDS: Roland Garros Edition

If you are what you say you are
A superstar
Then have no fear
The camera's here
and the microphones and they wanna know

 - Lupe Fiasco, Superstar

So it was another busy day at Roland Garros which means, aside from the big news like the grounding of Tomas Berdych, there were a bunch of small but still interesting tidbits floating around:

- Three American teens had a rough go of it today - all lost their matches - but it made from some money quotes: Christina McHale "I just panicked and didn't take my time."; Melanie Oudin "...I feel like where my ranking is now is where I should be."; Coco Vandeweghe "[The argument] put me over the edge. It's my own fault for letting it carry over." Tennis can have a brutal learning curve, huh?

- Aravane Rezai talked about her struggle to find peace of mind amidst the issues with her father: "Every single day, it’s a fight against myself."

- Ryan Harrison will fill the role of lucky loser after Benjamin Becker withdrew last minute with an injury late Monday. He'll face Robin Soderling.

- A petulant Michael Llodra throws a tennis ball at a security guard in the stands then argues with chair ump Mohamed El Jennati telling him, "We are not in a souq, we are not selling carpets in a market." Yuck.

- Roger Federer is feeling frustrated by the balls. No comment.

- Caroline Wozniacki was working the same Tennis Ruffle Dress from Indian Wells + Miami. What gives Stella??

+ WEDNESDAY NETCORDS: Can't we all just get along?

"We're one big happy family. Well, mostly. Actually not at all. Cheese!"

- The Lleyton Hewitt-Bernard Tomic bwahaha continues to gather gossipy steam with the older Aussie apparently laughing off the prodigy's assertion that swine flu prevented him from a joint practice session during this year's Wimbledon. "He just couldn't believe it. He laughed at it,'' said Lleyton's manager David Drysdale. ''You've got to wonder. I would have thought if he had swine flu at the tournament he wouldn't have been able to play at the tournament or be around other people, and it's interesting that the Tomics try to come out with this now." Team Tomic also denied accusations they approached Juan Carlos Ferrero for a practice the same day.

- Ballers get their party on in Beijing

- Call me crazy Sveta, but isn't that move illegal? I'm thinking a double Slam suspension is in order.

- TENNIS' head honcho James Martin grades the tweeting of some our fave ballers with Sam Querrey gettting top marks because his tweets are "[d]roll, without a hint of irony" while Mats Wilander tied for the highest mark with Sammie (if you're a gambler) and lowest if you actually like tennis because he's also "pimping Expekt, a global sports book, poker, casino and bingo." How odd.

- AskMen.com just released their Top 49 most influential men of 2009 with Andy Roddick rolling in at No. 35 and Roger Federer cracking the Top 10 at No.8.

(UPDATED) ROUND ROBIN: Tennis news from around the grounds

Since there's been so much tennis news to cover recently (more than one man with two hands can handle alone), I felt a quick roundup was in order. And by no means is this an exhaustive list:

- SI's Jon Wertheim's US Open seed reports for the boys + ladies are up...and so are mine!
- Rafa takes in Mamma Mia!, gets a shot with Kimmie Clijsters
- ReRe featured on cover and inside story of Hamptons Magazine
- Dani jumps ship, lands with adidas and will work with Sven Groeneveld + Darren Cahill in the brand's baller development program
- Check out The New York Observer's US Open coverage - good stuff
- A-Rod calls TIU's Twitter policy for US Open "lame"; visited David Letterman this past week; Q&A with Straight Sets; spotted locking lips with Brooklyn; has a fan in RHONY's Bethenny Frankel
- Arthur Ashe Kids' Day was a smash
- Nando + Wozzi are Pilot Pen champs
- Gonzo does Mason's meet-and-greet
- What's in a name or initials? Ask RF. Oh, and check out his interview with Gimel for CBS.
- Word has it US Open Series winner Elena is officially a New Yorker.

Also, today is the last day to enter the Dick's Sporting Goods DtL Reader Giveaway to win a $100 gift card to the retailer. The winner will be announced tomorrow.

Enjoy the US Open everyone!!!

PS - Thanks Nirali for your tips.

UPDATE: I totally forgot to mention the official baller party for this year's US Open sponsored by Heineken and held at Skyline Studios. I guess it slipped my mind because no one aside from Venus Williams, Tommy Robredo, James Blake, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands managed to show face. Maybe the USTA should consider making it a mandatory event for the tours. Just a thought.

+ MONDAY NETCORDS: Watch the teeth. Always.

- The USTA announced they will be streaming more than 150 matches during the US Open - and all for FREE. Tennis is starting to figure out this online thing, huh? [Tennis Week]

- Ivo Minar has become the latest baller to be accused of taking a banned substance during tourney play. The the sample was taken after a Davis Cup quarterfinal victory over Argentina on July 10-12 and contained a derivative of the banned stimulant pseudoephedrine. "I have never consciously taken a banned substance. This is why I rejected the accusation of doping in my reaction sent to the ITF," said Ivo. I guess we'll see you in two years...if you're found guilty that is...[ESPN]

- Serena Williams' memoir "On the Line" out on September 1st; Andre Agassi's autobiography out in November [SerenaWilliams.com, AP]

- The ever-growing BryanBros band and brand are featured in The New York Times Magazine preview article "Unseparated Since Birth" and the New Yorker article "Perfect Match". Talk about a serious media machine. [NYT, New Yorker]

- Steve Tignor wonders if Elena Dementieva's Rogers Cup win over Maria Sharapova this weekend will springboard her to a US Open championship and a maiden major. Well the last two times the tourney was held in Toronto (it moves to Montreal every other year) the winner went on to grab the title at Flushing Meadow - Kim Clijsters in '05 + Justine Henin in '07. If the Russian's serve nerve can hold steady, I think she can pull through in the end. [TENNIS]

- Jon Wertheim goes on the defensive for the line judge in all of us in his new Monday "best of 3" list. Back off you camera-wielding freaks! [SI]

- Tennis Served Fresh is visiting the Pilot Pen this week and grabbed some shirtless shots of Nando, Chucho, GiGi and an ass shot of A-Bon (had to throw one in for the boys...and girls.) [TSF]

+ FRIDAY NETCORDS: Roger, Justine, Amelie, Steffi vs. Andy...Alicia defends Mark, Maria is most spankable and more

- No AP love: So the tennis dynamic duo of Roger Federer & Justine Henin have won virtually every tennis accolade imaginable, including ITF and TENNIS magazine honors, this year. But today both World No. 1's are playing second fiddle in the AP's Athlete of the Year honors. Fed lost out to New England Patriot's pretty boy Tom Brady while Justine saw golfer Lorena Ochoa grab the most votes. Fed, who yet again lost the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year honor to another footballer, is most likely the greatest player the sport of tennis will ever see, while Justine had the best, and most dominant, year of her career. Bullshit - that's all we have to say.

- Tennis gives back: Another player known for her dominance, Steffi Graf, and her Children for Tomorrow foundation are building a medical centre in the German city of Hamburg to counsel children who have been traumatized by war or losing their homes. In other philanthropic news, The Andy Roddick Foundation is working on building an $8.2 million tennis complex called Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center in Austin, TX. The center will serve as a training ground for the Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program, which gives at-risk youth the opportunity to learn the game and compete.

- A brand new day: After a career-making 2006 led to a disappointing 2007, former World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo is determined to make a brilliant start to her 2008 in Oz. The 2-time Grand Slam champ told the Herald Sun, "Even as a veteran of 11 years in pro tennis, I still have a great passion for the game and I must say that there is less pressure being ranked lower,[...] I am doing everything I can to make that (winning the Australian Open) happen. Australia has always meant something special to me."

-Naughty or nice: Maria "Shriek"apova was voted Most Spankable Sportswoman, beating out Tatiana Golovin, Martina Hingis, and the Williams sisters. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Most Spankable went to Chris Evert. Really? Well, we suppose she deserves a few spanks after her latest romantic drama.

- Playing defense: Aussie Alicia Molik has come to the defense of her compatriot Mark Philippoussis. The 'Scud', who tore cartiledge in his right knee during qualies for the Australian Open and is now considering retirement, has been the subject of severe criticism in his home country. "I think it's a shame that all the public feel like they need to get so involved and so critical and criticise so much, because I just don't think it's fair. Let him be, let every sportsperson in Australia be — and yeah, there's a lot to deal with obviously for him, on the court, to not to have to worry about what's said and what's written. Let him go about his business. He's still playing tennis," said Alicia.

- ESPN.com's Bonnie D. Ford puts her hat in the ring with the best and worst of 2007.

- WTF moment: It's good to know even rich and famous tennis players can take a step down and join the common people. Stepping out of your comfort zone - we applaud you!

- What was 2007 like for Sania Mirza? How is she preparing for 2008 and her first event, the Hopman Cup?? We'll let the Indian sensation tell you herself.

- On the Baseline has 10 questions for Marion Bartoli and up-and-coming player Tamira Paszek, while FOXSports.com has 10 questions for the ladie's 2008 season - sense a trend?

- Changing of the guard: Congrats go out to Mary Jo Fernandez for her new role as FED CUP captain, replacing Zina Garrison who will step down at the end of 2008. “I am thrilled to be part of the U.S. Fed Cup team once again, [...] Fed Cup was one of the most important and memorable times of my career. I am excited to be working with Zina in 2008, and then taking on the Captain’s role in 2009,” said Mary Jo.
