Newly-crowned US Open champ Juan Martin del Potro, who qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour finals, jumped aboard the NYC media merry-go-round today making many a stop to celebrate his stunning upset over Roger Federer yesterday.
At a media round table, the 20-year old was FINALLY allowed to address his fans (thanks to Sports Illustrated) in Spanish and English after initially being put off by Dick Enberg during the trophy due to time constraints and the presentation of his new Lexus. Delpo was only allowed to say a few words in his native tongue after having to ask again. Tsk, tsks to everyone involved in that unfortunate moment.
Here's the clip in case you missed it:
The Argentine also made a pit stop at the Empire State Building for a quick photo op and was greeted by a few fangirls while leaving the iconic landmark. It seems he's really got his head in the clouds now, eh?
And, you can't be in New York City without visiting the morning shows and taking a seat at a prestigious talk show table:

Congrats DelPo!
OK, Juan, let's see what you've got...not sure I'm crazy about him, but maybe he can prove me wrong in this Open...Wow, that is just too awful, what’s wrong with this world. She probably and defiantly had a future and it’s all taken away…
ReplyDeleteHoly shit Charlie Rose! That is serious! I don't think even Roger has been on Charlie Rose (the last tennis player I can remember on that show is Marat Safin back when he too won the U.S. Open.)
ReplyDeleteCongrats Juan, you deserved it. He's adorable and I'm a sucker for blue argyle.
Nevermind, I lied. Roger has been on Charlie Rose as well as Serena and Pete Sampras. In case anyone's interested, the interviews can be seen on Charlie Rose's website(am I spamming?)
ReplyDeleteWha? You, spamming?? NEVAH. Keep the info coming Sara!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rich, I wasn't sure if directing readers to Charlie's website was considered spam.
ReplyDeleteHere's the page with all the tennis interviews.

Awesome, all the way around! :)
ReplyDeleteThe whole CBS cutting things short is such a disgrace. Something tells me US Open and CBS both will be flooded with angry letters now that this whole [circus?] has come to a close!
Hey great tip on the charlie rose video! But does anyone have any links to the other interviews ??(early show, today show, regis and kelly)... I would LOVE to see those...also did he go on letterman?
ReplyDeleteUgh, I hated when he was told he couldn't say a few words in Spanish! He had just won his first slam for Christ's sake. It would have been a great way for fans to get to know him and warm to him. Enberg made the whole thing super cold and insincere....
ReplyDeletedel potro's humility and gentleness are a breath of fresh air!
ReplyDeletei was furious at dick enberg during the trophy ceremony! it's sickening how the usta officials keep rubbing the prize money up our noses! as if the players played for the money primarily! it's not like that in the other slams, they don't prioritize bombarding us with prizes over the players! infuriating!
