FASHION FIX: The ladies of Lacoste return, and so does the brand
Resurrected: Two ladies of Lacoste, Pocahontas wannabe Tatiana Golovin and Argentine Gisela Dulko, have returned at the Hopman Cup and, by the looks of things, so has the brand. When reminiscing about last season's Lacoste tennis duds, one word comes to mind: loungewear. We also remember some unfortunate polka-dots.
Anyway, this season the Frenchwear label has gone the more classic route of polo shirts with skirts while managing to keep the looks feminine with long, deep plackets on the tops and flirty fabrics on bottom. Nice start for ladies' Lacoste, we think.

PHOTO OP: The mystery of Maria Sharapova's mom is solved
Mystery mom: We don't know about you, but we've never seen the woman who gave us Maria "Shriek"apova. Rumor has it she doesn't enjoy watching Maria's matches and only likes to hear the scores afterwards.Well, ladies and gentlemen, from the "Maria Does the Holidays" photo series here she is...
Our first thought was, of course, where did she get her height from (jealous much?) Father Yuri is pretty short so we imagined her mom to be another 6' 2" Russian bombshell but, alas, we were wrong. Maria's even wearing ballerina flats and mom is in heels and she still doesn't come close to matching her height.
So one mystery is solved...onto the next...

FASHION FIX: adidas hits high mark with Alicia Molik, confuses with Novak Djokovic at Hopman Cup
FINALLY: Though we thought Sania Mirza's new adidas threads were fine, we are LOVING what the sports label has given Alicia Molik to wear at this weekend's Hopman Cup. Of all the so-called 'new' looks and styles we've seen for Australia, this is our favorite by far.
We're impressed with the white + wine color combo and the innovative details including the ergonomic dotting, the peek-a-boo florescent accents at the cap sleeves, and the hint of white border on the skirt. These subtle elements take the brand forward without trying too hard, plus it's obviously functional. We guess adidas gave the hometown girl something special to wear - smart.
Where we're left scratching our heads is why Novak Djokovic is sporting 2007 adidas duds at the start of 2008? We'd rather have him play shirtless than have him wear this over-the-top number again - and who would disagree? Not smart.

FASHION FIX: First look at Sania Mirza's new adidas tennis gear
Fashion first: Here's a first look at Sania Mirza in her new adidas gear playing at the Hopman Cup. The Indian sensation, who announced her new partnership with the global sports brand this week, took on Meghan Shaughnessy of the US who was filling in for a tardy Serena Williams and lost 6-3 4-6 6-3.
It looks like Sania is continuing her red + white fashion moment from last season's Japan Open, but our favorite is still the stylish green + white Lotto gear she wore during her successful US summer run.

Sania Mirza signs multi-year partnership with adidas
"I am extremely happy to be part of such a distinguished family of players and brand ambassadors. I have been associated with the brand as a junior and I believe adidas` experience and expertise will be a key part of my on-court performance. I am really looking forward to wearing the stylish 3-Stripes for many years to come."

THE LOW DOWN: Andy Roddick slams media for choosing Simpson over substance
According to A-Rod,
"I have been on the go since Davis Cup. I have played in a bunch of charity events and am convinced that tennis is an amazing sport. You hear so much about pro athletes being spoiled and getting arrested and that sort of thing….unfortunately, the media chooses those stories over the good ones that are out there. So many tennis players use the little off-season they have to raise money for charitable causes of their choice. It’s a really great thing. I wish there was a way to get these kinds of things as much attention as what hot chick is wearing whose jersey at a football game and who’s pissed about it or whatever…."No worries A-Rod, we're up in ALL of your business. We've written about both your charity work and your love life. It's much more fun for us, really.

VIDEO VAULT: Maria Sharapova brings new look, and ping pong skills, to The Ellen Degeneres Show
Maria "Shriek"apova spent part of her pre-holiday celebrations visiting The Ellen Degeneres Show, working the new bangs we wrote about last week. Wow - Maria is a giant next to Ellen (of course the fashionista is wearing about 3" stilletos on her 6' 2" frame) and she can TALK. But in all fairness Maria seemed genuinely nervous and excited. The former Wimbledon champ even took on Ellen in a game of ping pong - we won't say who won. You'll have to see for yourself...

Letter to our readers: Happy Holidays!
Hello readers,
We'll be posting sporadically over the next week as we'll be getting our party on for the holidays. We'll still be monitoring the tennis news so if anything extraordinary happens, we'll be there.
In the meantime, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the support over the last 7 months since we started this blog and for believing we actually had something interesting to say about the sport we love - tennis. We look forward to continuing to bring our brand of tennis coverage the best way we know how - Down the Line!
Happy Holidays and all the best in the New Year!
- Rich

FASHION FIX: A closer look at The Boris Becker Collection
The Boris Becker Collection is a full tennis line that not only includes apparel but also tennis racquets, tennis bags, strings, dampners, and even tennis balls! Though there are 3 fashion groups, we pulled highlights from our favorite: BB Retro Court - Black & White Collection. (We'd be fools to try to review the equipment so we'll leave it to What's All the Racquet.)

FASHION FIX: Lleyton Hewitt enters the fashion game, looks to build a brand
"It's funny — I walk down the street and everybody says 'C'mon.' They copy me for doing my signal. I'm not quite sure how to describe that signal, there's no real word for it. So we've trademarked 'C'mon.'"But the future Lleyton Hewitt brand won't be limited to tennis clothing.
"We're going to try and push ["C'mon"] as much as possible as my brand, and get it out there in the marketplace, make shirts for kids, golf shirts and different kinds of stuff like cargo shorts."Lleyton wasn't the first tennis player to use "the vight" hand sign, however. It was invented in the 1980's by Niclas Kroon, an obscure Swedish tour player, and later made famous by Mats Wilander. The word "vight" is loosely translated to mean "for sure".

Martina Navratilova discusses being gay in tennis, doping, and Federer vs. Henin with Outsports
A: I’m a woman first, because that’s been more limiting in a way, and it still is, depending on what country you’re born in. I want the fact that I’m gay to be irrelevant one day. It’s relevant now because we don’t have equal rights and we are discriminated against. One day they won’t even say gay, but right now it is part of leading the way and being a pioneer and leading the fight for equal rights for all of us. It might be because I became famous first as a tennis player and then I came out. But then it was still always “lesbian tennis player.”

FASHION FIX: Will Maria Sharapova be wearing this Nike gear at the '08 Aussie Open?
We like all of the colorways except for the purple - we've never really been big fans of purple because it's a pretty tough color to work into a good outfit. Of course, we're loving the gray and tank dress with the pink (?) graphic design on the skirt; the white is clean and classic.
Can anyone confirm Maria will be wearing any of the pieces above during the Australian Open next month?

BREAKING: Anna Chakvetadze and family robbed at country home in Russia, parents tied up
BREAKING: Reuters is reporting Anna Chakvetadze and her parents were victims of a house invasion at the country home in southwest Russia early this morning. Anna was not harmed but her father suffered cuts and bruises from the incident.
The group of five to six men were wearing masks and climbed over the fence of the home, tied up her parents, and took over $200,000 worth of valuables. According to Anna's father Jamal,
"They started to beat me up, I resisted, then they hit me either with their hands or a pistol. It was dark, told me I had a child there, reminded me about it, so that I gave them everything. So I did."
UPDATE: New reports are saying Anna was tied up along with her parents and according to Shamil Tarpishchev she "tried to resist but it was useless."

THE LOW DOWN: To grunt or not to grunt, that is the question...
"If that was me and I was playing Sharapova, I would be saying, 'If you continue with that you can have the match, I'll walk off, and I'll lodge a complaint,' [...] The other girls should say 'Fine, I'll forfeit the match.'[...] Will it happen? I don't think so."

THE LOW DOWN: The inauspicious start to Chris Evert's relationship with Greg Norman
“Greg Norman at one time was my best friend and a year-and-a-half ago I would have taken a bullet for this guy, [...] But I didn't realise he was the one who was going to pull the trigger.”Evert and Aussie Norman publicly came out at the start of 2007 with a high-profile date at Doyles fish restaurant which is within sight of Sydney Harbour in Australia.
