Novak Djokovic is giving Roger Federer a run for his money - in the men's fashion battle that is.

Sharapova explains website mishap, will celebrate b-day in NYC
Maria "Shriek"apova is on the case. The Russian fashionista sent around the following newsletter explaining why her website was down:
Dear Fans,
Many of you may have noticed that MariaSharapova.com has been down over the past few days. We had some technical difficulties, but I wanted to let everyone know that the site is now back up and running! I am so sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused anyone. I know some of you were wondering if the site was down permanently, but I wanted to personally assure everyone that it was not. MariaSharapova.com is something I believe in deeply and I want all of my fans to keep coming back to check it out!
In fact, we have lots of fun things coming your way soon. As some of you might know, my 21st birthday is this Saturday! I'm currently down in Charleston playing in the Family Circle Cup, but I will be celebrating next week in New York City at a birthday party hosted by Tag Heuer. I'm so excited and I can't wait! I'll be posting all kinds of exclusive photos and video from the party, so be sure to come back next week to check it out.
In the meantime, you can check out my new videos from my Nike Training commercial shoot here and my new Prince Team Sharapova gold bag collection is now available...check them out in the store.
Talk to you soon!
Maria
So the bills were paid - good thing. And, she'll be here in New York to celebrate her birthday. I'll be on that one for sure!

ESPN to televise Wimbledon through 2013 - can they steal coverage back from FSN?
ESPN agreed to a six-year extension with the powers-that-be at The All-England Club to televise Wimbledon through 2013. ESPN2 will broadcast 100 hours of the grass-court Slam and matches will also be available online.
Dear ESPN: Can you please wrestle away all tennis coverage from the bumbling FSN Network before the Masters Cup at the end of the year? Pleeeease?!

FASHION FIX: Federer vs. the ladies
Thanks to DtL! reader Miros for sending in this cheeky observation on Roger Federer's recent tennis fashion.
Apparently, the world no. 1 is starting to look a lot like the ladies on the WTA Tour, including Maria Kirilenko's Estoril victim Petra Cetkovska in Lacoste. And remember, Fed is supposedly wearing the same Nike Sphere React Cool Polo from this image in Serena Williams' lilac for Roland Garros.
It seems Nike is putting the stylish Swiss in women's trends this season...interesting. But who wears it best?

FASHION FIX: Mattek double-bageled by Maria, outfit may be to blame
Bethanie Mattek got white-washed by Maria "Shriek"apova in Charleston, suffering an embarrassing 6-0, 6-0 loss to the in-form Russian.
Maria probably wanted to get off the court with a quickness to avoid looking at Bethanie's outfit. Though the top half is fine, I'm sure the bottom was a hot mess. How do I know? Let me present my evidence here + here.
Case closed.

FASHION FIX: Kirilenko makes stylish moves in Estoril
Maria Kirilenko is battling ballers in Estoril this week while the top ladies are gathered in Charleston for the Bausch + Lomb Championships. The Russian took down Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
I have to say I'm a bigger fan of Maria's fashion than her game. Though her counter-punching ways can go awry, her tennis stylish gear from adidas by Stella McCartney always hits the mark especially the Tennis Polo White top she's working here.
Can her game catch up?

THE LOW DOWN: Gasquet gets public thumping after Davis Cup debacle
Richard Gasquet is getting on his country's bad side - and that's never a good thing for any baller nevermind a French one.
During last weekend's Davis Cup tie versus the US, Richard refused to play Andy Roddick in the fourth rubber because of some injuries and a shaky head.
After the tie, Davis Cup captain Guy Forget said about the situation,I had to try and work out whether Richard was fit mentally and physically to play. He had suffered from just about everything before the tie — a blister, a bad knee, a bad thigh — and all that got into his head as well. I had to see how he felt. I had the other option of Arnaud Clement but his form for the last month (in singles) has been so poor that I did not feel I could go that route. Then I heard from some French journalists that Richard had said he was only prepared to play the fifth match. When I spoke to him he told me that was true. He said he thought he had no chance again[st] Roddick. So [Paul-Henri] Mathieu was my choice.
And now French tennis federation president Christian Bimes has publicly slammed Richard saying,
I’m disappointed about what happened this weekend in Winston-Salem. We’re considered as a nation capable of winning the Davis Cup and I see that for the past three years we have struggled to rely on our best players and they’re not always determined to win, which was our problem this weekend. You have to make the players understand that they need to fight, to make sacrifices, even if they are undermined by an injury. Guy Forget did what he could but next time, we’ll have to thump the table to make ourselves clear.
"Thump the table" - never heard that saying but it doesn't sound good for Richard. And, I'll be interested to see how the notoriously fickle French fans will receive their No. 1 at Roland Garros this year.
FASHION FIX: It's a new, stylish world for Fish
Mardy Fish is looking to keep his good form going at the US Claycourt Championships. The American moved into the second round with 7-6 (4), 6-3 over German Rainer Schuettler.
Mardy's confidence is definitely on display, even in his current fashion taste. The third seed played his first round match in the K-Swiss Ultracell Polo in periwinkle and the Accomplish Court Short in white.
I like this new Mardy and his stylish tennis duds. Could his engagement be the reason he's turned himself around? If so, let's hope A-Rod's does the same for him, though his recent style choices aren't too encouraging.

Did Maria Sharapova forget to pay her bills?
Uh-oh. Here's another possible case of a tennis baller not paying the bills.
I strolled on over to Maria "Shriek"apova's website this morning and was greeted with the screen above. Did the Russian forget to send in a payment or is she revamping and moving her site?

Serena afraid of being Santorized - join the club!
Serena Williams isn't afraid of anyone on the tennis court - any woman, that is.
The 8-time Grand Slammer, who's the No. 5 seed at this week's Family Circle Cup, was asked whether she was disappointed that Justine Henin withdrew from the tourney. In typical ReRe fashion she responded,
Well I didn’t even know she wasn’t here until you told me, so no, I guess not. Honestly, I don’t get concerned about who I’m going to play. I’ll go up against anybody. But, as if realizing the sweeping statement she just make, ReRe quickly modified her response:
Except Federer or Nadal. Or Santoro. Anybody but them. Especially Santoro.Wow - even ReRe's afraid of being "Santorized". He must be a nightmare to play against!

Federer defeats Rochus in 3 sets, but what's on his face?
Roger Federer struggled to beat Olivier Rochus in the first round of Estoril, needing 3 sets to put away the diminutive Belgian.
But what is the large bump on the side of Fed's face? It looks pretty swollen, like a bee sting or something.
Strange...

Fifteen-year old Harrison defeats Cuevas at Houston, wins first ATP-level match
We have a new American star on the rise - well, maybe.
Fifteen-year old qualifier Ryan Harrison won his first round match against Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 at the U.S. Clay Court Championship on Monday. Ryan becomes only the third player this decade to win an ATP tour-level match before his 16th birthday, following Rafael Nadal's win at Mallorca and Richard Gasquet's win at Monte Carlo, both in 2002.
Pretty good company, huh?

PHOTO OP: Lleyton goes Lindsay, drags Mia into spotlight
Here's Lleyton Hewitt waving to the crowd with daughter Mia after the Aussie annihilated Kirati Siributwong of Thailand 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 during the Group 1 second round Davis Cup tie. The Australian team defeated the Thais and will now enter the play-offs in September.
For someone who's been so critical of the media attention he and his family receive, I'm surprised he'd drag his daughter into the spotlight à la Lindsay Davenport. I guess what's not good for the goose is all well and good for the gander Lleyton!

PHOTO OP: Federer + Higueras practice partnership
Here's a first glimpse of Roger Federer and Jose Higueras getting in some practice on the clay in Estoril.
The top-ranked baller announced via his website that he would be working with the Higueras this week saying,I am also excited as I have asked Jose Higueras, one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the world of tennis, to join me. Jose has coached many of the games great players including former #1 Jim Courier and Michael Chang. We are going to spend the week together to see if we could make a good team.

Davis Cup Chronicles: A look back at the weekend's most manly moments
Of course, man-on-man action is only seen in tennis during Davis Cup play. So I think the best way to look back at this weekend's ties is with some of the ballers' most "manly moments":

Anna shoots new K-Swiss ad, brings fans behind-the-scenes
Anna Kournikova may not be playing professionally anymore, but that doesn't mean the original tennis glamourpuss is just sitting pretty.
The Russian is one of K-Swiss's prized personalities and the former top-tenner just shot a new ad for the sports brand and will be taking part in a triathalon in Miami. Anna blogged about her latest activities and included some behind-the-scenes action saying,
Hi guys -I wonder what she thinks of Alona as the new Anna?
Here's a quick update on what has been going on this week. On Tuesday I had to get up really early to go to the CBS4 studio and do their morning show to promote the Nautica South Beach Triathlon, which I'll be running in on Sunday. From there, we went straight to the first location and started shooting a new ad for K-Swiss, lots of behind the scenes pictures included for you here! We shot all day until 8pm but got sidetracked by lots of rain, so we had to go back on Wednesday to finish 2 shots, they both ended up great!
Don't forget about the Triathlon on Sunday in South Beach and next week I'll be going to Tijuana, Mexico to open a Boys and Girls Club there, I'm really looking forward to it!!

THE LOW DOWN: Venus blogs + clears air about "hiatus"
Venus Williams wants to set the record straight.
It was reported last week that the 6-time Grand Slammer was taking an indefinite hiatus from tennis due to an undisclosed medical reason. But V, who was spotted looking healthy + relaxed with boyfriend Hank Kuehne at the Masters, wants us to know that an over-zealous reporter at Amelia Island took a different spin to her news:
Great news! Why can't more athletes be as proactive and direct as V in their responses? She continues to set the standard for the rest.Hello everyone,
I am sure over the past few days you have heard some reports about me taking a “hiatus” from tennis. This could not be further from the truth and I just wanted to provide an update to those of you who are concerned.
The last few months have included a great deal of travel (5 continents in 2 months) and a lot of matches. I am not experiencing an injury (thank goodness) but after the Miami tournament my physio and I agreed that this was a smart time to have some preventative checkups on everything from my knees to my shoulder to my wrist to make sure that everything is in order. This is in preparation for a long summer that begins next month with the pre-French Open events in Europe and will last through the US Open in September. I have learned that caution is key and my goal is to do everything I can to put myself in the best position to do well during this next stretch.
The speculation that arose last week is an unfortunate example of one writer incorrectly spinning a story that took on a life of its own. I agreed to visit the Amelia Island tournament (Bausch and Lomb Championships) last week after my withdrawal to offer my support to the tournament and the WTA(and will do the same in Charleston this week). During my visit, I met with sponsors and fans and participated in a media session. From the media session somehow one of the writers translated my statement that I intend to return to competitive play next month for the French Open as an “indefinite leave of absence”??? While it was great to hear from a lot of old friends that wanted to make sure I was ok, this headline was wrong. To be very clear, I am healthy, I am not on an indefinite leave of absence and I will be back on Tour next month beginning in Rome (May 12).
I love playing tennis more and more each day and have no intentions of sitting on the sidelines and watching on TV!
The upcoming weeks will include my visit to Charleston and the Family Circle Cup tournament for a few days this week. I’ll watch Serena play on Tues night and then back to Florida for practice and training. It will be nice to spend a little time at home and catch up on a variety of things including quality time with my friends and family and of course working on new designs for Eleven spring 09 in fact). Thank you for the support. ttyl, vee
