MEDIA MASHUP: Wozzi beats Bepa and leg cramps in Doha

"I'm going to Disney World. Screw this."

D-D-D-DRAMA.

Caroline Wozniacki overcame a case of severe cramps to defeat Vera Zvonareva 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4 and go up 2-0 in round robin play in Doha today. The Russian had replaced compatriot Dinara Safina after she pulled out yesterday with a back injury.

The Danish teen was treated twice for her left leg, which has been heavily strapped, and fell to the court in pain after netting a forehand at 30-15 in the last game. She managed to recover just enough to close out Russian foe and cried with happiness/pain/relief after it was all said and done.

I have to give Wozzi major props for closing out this dramatic match especially with all the leg issues she's been experiencing lately. And to be up 2-0 in the White Group after dusting off Victoria Azarenka yesterday is stellar. Hopefully she'll be recovered enough to out-run Jelena Jankovic in their final round robin match.

As for Bepa, well, she had problems of her own during the match besides the usual:

  4. By the way, where was that heart and gut when she retired at 5-0 up in Luxembourg?

  5. that heart and gut? she was saving it. if she continued on in luxembourg, she knew it jeopardized her chances at doing well in doha. i really hope caroline gets to the final here.

  6. That was painful to watch... Major props to Wozzi for closing that out despite the fact that she was obviously in extreme pain.

Gabypa: Yep, he freaks me the hell out too.

  7. It's always nice to have the support of your parents. I am curious if we can read in Wozzi's memoirs in 20 years from now that she always hated tennis because of her violent father.. or something to that degree.

  8. Papa Woz sould shut his piehole and stop going on in the press about how his moonballing daughter's injuries are "career-threatening." He's done this a couple of times this year - first before Eastbourne where he told the press Caro might be out for two-three months with a bad back (she didn't miss any time), then after Luxembourg where he made it sound like he might have to put her down ala Old Yeller.

  10. She won't last long. She'll soon go the way of Hingis. The papa from hell is milking this kid for all she's got.

  11. go the way of hingis? you mean win 5 grand slams? good for her! go caroline!

  12. Hingis got those before the Williams dominance. When they came up, Hingis went away. No way that pusher is going anywhere but away.
She had three injuries in one week. Thigh, cramps, and abdominal strain. Choose one ailment and shut up.
