VIDEO VAULT: Emotional Fed drowns in pool of tears during Aussie Open trophy presentation

"This is SO awkward..."

In case you missed it, here's video of the Aussie Open men's final trophy presentation which featured the usual happenings - tons of "thanks", some trophy lifting, praise, consolatory words - and something very unusual: Roger Federer completely shattered.

The usually serene Swiss was left in a pool of tears and unable to address the crowd, the pain of the loss written all over his face. He eventually makes his way back to the mic after some coaxing from Rafa but continues to sob uncontrollably throughout the rest of the presentation.

This one REALLY hurt.

  1. Aw I wanted to give him a hug and why was Mirka looking like she lost? Give your man a "it's-ok-baby" smile.

  2. I'm a hudge rafa supporter but this time I started crying when I saw roger. It's amazing how someone who's like a robot on the court can get so emotional and can't control his tears... I felt so sorry for him and started crying, I almost forgot how happy I was for rafa!
Thank you for your great blog! I've been reading it for quite some time and I love it!

  5. It broke my heart the way Roger looked on the stand. I hope he can use the pain to make himself stronger. As much as I love Rafa, I think Roger needs to get his groove back because the sport is most beautiful with two evenly matched foils. And for pity's sake, Rafa needs to stop saying sorry to Roger!

  6. uhm..... the tears kinda spoiled the joyous event, but I'm so glad that RAFA is sooo sweet to go back and comfort Roger! RAFA's a great athlete and I like his humility! Rafa deserves it! He gets better and better each year, and he's only 22 y/o! Roger would probably tie Sampras' record during the US Open IMO.

But right now, I'm just sooo happy! It's a good b-day present! thanks Rafa! haha....

.......and by the look on Rod Laver's expression, I think he was rooting for Fed. It's ok, Rafa try to win 3 more this year =) I'm happy to be a fan!

  7. When Rafa says sorry to Rodge, he's not apologizing for winning...I think he's just saying, look, obviously both of us want to win, sorry things didn't work out for you. I don't take it in a bad way. I take it as Rafa recognizing that the desire to win is very powerful (esp for these 2 guys), and he knows how great it feels to win, as well as how crappy it can feel to lose. It doesn't mean he wishes Fed had won, I think he's just being sensitive to the fact that these moments can be very hard. I don't think Fed takes it in a bad way either. Well that's my take on it :)

As for what the moment was, I agree with b2012's post.

  8. It was so emotional, I was crying too. I understand Fed but I did had the feeling that Rafa was a bit ashamed to be happy now. And the moment were Rafa hugged Fed was soooo cute :D

  9. There is alot of Fedhaters and Fedhate all around these blogs. Definately very Pro-Rafa.

  10. Rafa could very well eclipse Fed's and Pete's achievements at the rate he's going. He almost holds the Golden Slam. Vamos!

Almost every blog I've ever read that's purely tennis related is Pro-Fed. Believe me, I've run into LOTS of Rafabashing. The fact that people like him here is REFRESHING. So I don't feel bad that people like him here. And for the record, I think the word "hate" is a very strong word. I wouldn't go that far by any means.

  12. What's wrong with being Pro-Rafa? Am I supposed to feel guilty or something? Well in any case, I don't. VAMOS RAFA!!! GREAT WIN!!!

  13. Yes, awkward describes it. Heartbreaking, too.

Rafa was awesome throughout the match and handled the post match situation so well. He's such a remarkable player and person. I felt bad that he couldn't just give up to the joy of victory, though - as a Fed fan even I have to say that Roger kind of stole his moment.

But in Fed's defense, he was in a situation no one has ever been in before: one match away from tying Pete's record. So even a Great Champion might completely lose his sh*t at a moment like that. (Although if Rafa gets there, he'll probably just swing his way through it!)

It's tough being a Fed fan today, but I'm happy for Nadal and hopeful that this "rivalry" will somehow keep evolving. Roger, get thee to a coach (and a psychiatrist!) ASAP.

  14. I am very glad that he lost and thought the crying was pathetic, so unmanly; his blubbing, the trembling lower lip.

  15. Boo hoo! How pathetic.

  16. Guys, come on. Notice how Roger went and took the podium again after Rafa hugged and talked to him. Maybe he told Roger to give it another try.

Let's try not to think bad of Roger ok. Both are great champions. I think a few tears were in order.

  17. anon 2:35 - All tennis fans and opinions are welcomed here at DtL, no worries. Believe me every baller has their moments to shine and some moments that aren't necessarily worth repeating - though I gladly write about both here!

  19. cy-what are you-12? So sad -your definition of manliness. Grow up!

  20. Just as Rafa, I can really relate to Roger here. I think he didn't really lose control simply because he lost, but because there was so much pressure on him (maybe from himself a lot too) and it all fell off as soon as the match was over and he was trying to realize what just happened. I also think he really didn't mean to steal Rafa's thunder - although he did a bit. LOL

Plus: I think it's very mature of him to show his tears and emotions openly. He kinda had no choice, it just washed all over him, and it's endearing. Finally this superhuman, on-court sometimes robot-like man shows he's only flesh and bones, too. And everyone's different after all - Rafa apparently saves his tears for later. ;)

Anyways, I feel Roger's pain, as happy as I am Rafa won, and Rafa's response and consolation (the hug!!) was wonderful.

Roger just needs to get over the drama afterwards - just don't get Rafaphobic! LOL

With all that said, I gotta cheer for Rafa once more: VAMOS champ!!

PS: The Fedhate comment is ridiculous.

PPS: Was it just me or couldn't Mirka care less?? I was near tears, and she's sitting there watching her love falling apart, not shedding a teeny tiny tear or showing any real emotion. Um, hello?!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sonja: I agree - Mirka's reaction was BIZARRE. I was like...Hello?? Can you smile, be encouraging, or something? You man feels like shit and you need to help show him it's not the end of the world (because that's the way he's feeling!) Weird.

    Anyways....VAMOS RAFA!!! :)

  22. I saw her wiping away tears- on ESPN.

  23. watch the video again and see one of the ball boys crying...yeah i cried too =(

  24. Fed needs to get over himself. What a brat, does he think he is the only one entitled to winning everything? I feel bad for those who try so hard but never quite make it because of all sorts of bad luck, injuries etc. I don't feel bad for that spoiled brat. Boo hoo, cry me a river you arrogant jerk.

  25. I'm not a fan of either of them but I almost had a heart attack during this match and all I can say is congratulations to both of them. It was a fantastic match.
I was rooting for Nadal, but I felt horrible for Roger afterwards. It was an incredible gesture of Nadal to hug him in the ceremony, I was moved.
I hope we'll have many more matches like this. They're great champions!
Congratulations to Nadal fans and conmiserations Federer fans.

  26. Mirka looked like "Get the camera the f*ck away from my face" haha. Rafa was near tears himself, appluading with the crowd for Roger.

So when a guy cries, he's pathetic. Let's see your fathers, brothers, and husbands/boyfriends cry then. Whatever the reason, he had a right to cry it out albeit in the locker room or in front of everybody -- after all, this isn't the first time he cried in front of Rod Laver.

  27. Rafa is so sweet, he handled the moment so well. I think he did what alot of us wish we could have done- give Roger a hug!

    ReplyDelete
  28. That was so hard to watch. I could just feel Rogers pain he wanted it so much. I wish I could have given him a hug.

  29. probably my hardest moment as Fedophile, broke down to tears. :(

  30. "After all, this isn't the first time he cried in front of Rod Laver."

LOL Anon 9:15, that is in fact true. He must be going: "Why's the kid always sobbing when he sees me? Is it my hair?"

    :D

  31. Everybody says it showed that Federer is human. Yes, both of them showed they they are humans--Federer's crying also revealed how extremely self-centered he is, whereas Rafa almost forgot about his win, and showed that in addition to his strong sense of competitiveness, he can also be altruistic.

  32. "Federer's crying also revealed how extremely self-centered he is"

Exsqueeze me? You've obviously never competed hard in a sport!!!!!

  33. I don't think there's any need for people to get angry. Fed was emotional and Rafa was compassionate. They had a really nice moment together and it was great to see. Congrats to both players for such a wonderful final. What an amazing day for tennis :)
