Serena beaten in Marbella, will lose keys to WTA Penthouse

Serena Williams - surprise, surprise - lost her opening round match in Marbella 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to Czech Klara Zakopalova. The 10-time Grand Slammer was clearly still struggling with the left leg injury she sustained in Miami as she was broken seven times in the match.

Click here to listen as ReRe discusses the reasons why she made the long trip despite the injury.

So I believe, based on this result, Dinara Safina will officially take the keys to the WTA Penthouse on April 20th after Charleston. ReRe needed to win in Marbella and defend her title in the southern city to keep her set.

Congrats to Dinara but I still think it's crap.

  1. can you say "tanked"?

i love Ms ReRe, but c'mon, seriously girl?

i hope JJ wins now, she could do with putting an end to her Serbian Slide. I know I sound crazy, but I think JJ might actually win RG this year, just for irony's sake.

  4. anon: I'd LURVE JJ to win RG. Now will it happen? Completely different story.

natch: That's the one Alexa wore in their match - I remember you said you had it. I'm sure you can still work it out. Just don't wear any bottoms. You know, change it up.

johanne: NO! I did not hear that one. Any more deets?

  5. I feel like Serena wore a similar 3/4 length shirt when she played doubles with V at Wimby last year, no?

Rich: this is all I got via tennis.com:

"Latvian sensation Ernests Gulbis, a quarterfinalist at last year's French Open, has parted ways with his coach following a recent run of dismal results."

    THE CHANGE HE NEEDS

  6. Good for Gulbis, I really expected him to come up with better results late 2008 and early 2009.

  7. johanne: thanks for the info - def needed. too much talent to waste. curlbis was dangerous (love the rhyme) last year at RG so let's hope he gets his marbles together before then. we NEED him in the mix - if only to see those bouncy red locks against the clay backdrop. picturesque.

  8. Hell, I'd lurv to see JJ win ANYTHING. But yep, it ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

    Richie,
I got the shirt in blue and dark obsidian. I got the low rise shorts in scarlet to wear at our Wimby warm-up. Do you think Rafa will be able to spot me?

  9. Forgot to say, Yay, Curlbis! He knows when to dump a coach. Bonus points to him.

  10. I would love to see JJ bag a title (Slam would be great) and some seriously glitter, but I'm not holding my breath.

Curlbis was def a dark horse last year. I was wondering where he was. Good for him, I hope the change helps.

  11. I personally just ignore the ranking system because we all know it's crap. I think the WTA suffers because of it's constant crap. The ATP is more smoothly run.
