"But Dent counters that the changes are based on objective research -- the polling of 20,000 fans conducted on behalf of the ATP. 'Sixty-one percent of people have come back to us and said they don't understand how the sport works. Now that is frightening,' he said. 'It's disappointing that some people aren't willing to accept what fans are telling us.'"
ReplyDeleteI'm probably pointing out the obvious, but if they don't know how the game works, they're not fans.
anon: yes, but i think he's talking here about the casual fan, the obsessed like me and maybe yourself. that's how the sport will grow - casual fans who become more engaged.
ReplyDeletebut if they're being turned off because it's confusing (which it can be) then tennis will suffer.
they know something needs to be done which is why there's so much change right now. administratively, it's a pretty tumultuous time.
Handling tennis like a business or adding print to nets (thank goodness that's not happening) won't make the sport any less confusing.
ReplyDeleteThe administrative changes are just an effort to make money. If everyone understood the game perfectly they would still approach it they way a hammer-wielding kid approaches a piggy bank.
It's all about the money.
