Dominika downs Jelena, denies Serb top ranking

Dominika Cibulkova was all smiles today in Montreal after defeating Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup. The win also prevented the Serb from attaining the coveted top ranking from compatriot Ana Ivanovic again.

Great win for the Slovak but JJ is a mess and clearly not ready for the big time. Isn't this the third time she's been on the brink and couldn't close the deal?

  1. Fourth time! Can we officially call her a choker?

  2. well...according to tennis.com: "Losing in the Montreal quarterfinals cost Jelena Jankovic her chance at becoming the WTA No. 1 on Monday, but she will become No. 1 on August 11 when Ivanovic loses her ranking points from winning in Los Angeles last year."

  3. she's going to be no. 1 but she's still a choker for sure. being no. 1 is great but becoming no. 1 by default and not by winning a Slam? well, not so great and she's said so herself.

she's not the first and certainly won't be the last baller to earn the top spot by playing more than anyone else and being consistent. blame the archaic ranking system. not JJ's fault by any means.

but i don't think she'll be feeling as satisfied and fulfilled as rafa does right now.

  4. I don't get how on friday everyone was saying she's got to win this match to get the #1 ranking and now that she's lost it, now they're saying she'll be #1 anyway. Such a confusing point process lol.
