I’m very happy today, more than yesterday. No. 3 is a very good number too.
- Rafael Nadal on dropping to the third spot in the ATP World Tour rankings today
I know Rafa likes to take these things in stride and play down rankings and such, but is he being genuine here when he says he's "happy today, more than yesterday"?

well we all love rafa more today than we did yesterday...he'll be back better than ever...and we'll appreciate how wonderful he is even more...
ReplyDeleteMaybe Rafa means he's happier than when he first found out Murray would for sure pass him, and then knowing Murray would jump even farther ahead bc he won Montreal? Rough weekend? Feeling better on Monday? Just a guess.
ReplyDeleteWith my match-up hat on, I think he has a better shot at beating Fed in the USO Semis than Murray. If he has to face Murray with the current ranking, it's gonna be in the Finals. Murray's playing the best hard-court tennis out there right now.
ReplyDeleteI think he's being very genuine. He has always seemed to enjoy the game more when he's fighting back.
ReplyDeletehaha same old Rafa. not even bothered by the change in ranking, I think he knows he can work his way back up once his knees 'kick' in :)
ReplyDeleteB2012: Interesting. I may be reaching here (so what's new?) but could the argument be made then that he might struggle with being the top baller rather than fighting for the top?
ReplyDeleteI'm not remembering the quote from the interview earlier this year when he mentioned something to the effect of it being lonely at the top - especially with his greatest rival, Fed, struggling at the time.
He's definately happier when he's chasing. He seems like one of those rare people for whom it's not so much about winning (or not losing) as it's about the competition itself. i really don;t think it would make much of a difference to him whether he was ranked 1 or 101, as long as he could compete.
ReplyDeletei agree i also think Rafa is happier when chasing than when is beeing chased. i think he likes to feel like a hunter, or if you want it the underdog
ReplyDeleteMaybe he is but I like the positive outlook more than the depressing negative tone he had when he played Canada. Now that he's number three maybe he will be reinvigorated and see his current standing as a new challenge to overcome.
ReplyDeleteRich I think he definitely did struggle. There was a promo video on ESPN, I think it was at RG time, where he talked about being number one, and talked about how different it felt NOT to be chasing Roger. He obviously was proud to have achieved number one, but it never really seemed to sit well. It's sort of like his matches. When he's down 1-4, he seems to play better than when he's 4-1, you know what I mean? I've always had more faith in his game when he is needing to fight. I guess it's just the competitiveness in his nature. He probably enjoys having a challenge. When you're number one, you're only really maintaining, not so much striving.
