PHOTO OP: Delpo surfs the net

Juan Martin del Potro was given a lesson on grass-court tennis at Wimbledon today.

The towering Argentine was upset by 2002 champ Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in the tourney's second round. The Aussie had the steadier game overall hitting 43 winners to only 14 errors, 14 aces, 23 of 28 net approaches, and converting 4 of 9 break chances. He'll next face Germany's Philipp Petzschner for a spot in the Round of 16.

Delpo can be a threat on the grass eventually but he'll need to learn how to use his weapons more often and more strategically, especially his incredibly wide wing span at the net. He has the groundies to get him there so it's just a matter of time.

Oh, and that forehand? Step into it more, not back!

  1. That was the coolest thing ever! Dude is TALL! He didn't even put much effort into jumping over the damn net. I loved when he adjusted the net and the official net adjuster lady had to come and make sure it was up to code. Oh Delpo, I love u so! Sorry to see you go, but good for Lleyton.

  2. I was so annoyed w/DP. I know he's your idol and all, but that doesn't mean you gotta give the match to him. DP was just not in that match mentally. So sad for him...

But as a side note, awesome pic. One of the coolest tennis pics I've seen so far b/c it's not every day you see a player jumping over the net, ha!

  3. Great for Hewitt, too bad for JMDP.
But that leap WAS amazing. Just like Narik said, he was almost yawning as he did it.
I would have liked to see Lleyton try doing the same thing. I think the net comes up to his shoulders. ;)
