WEEKEND WINNERS: Gilles, Patty

Gilles Simon - Bucharest

The Frenchie baller made it three championships on the year as he successfully defended his Bucharest title by defeating Spain's Carlos Moya. Gilles rises to the twelfth position in the ATP Race to Shanghai and sits a mere 48 points behind no. 8 James Blake. But, with the way James has been playing lately I'd say Gilles has as good a shot as anyone of booting him from the Race. Tough luck James.

Patty Schnyder - Bali

The Swiss lefty decides to grab some vacation time in Bali and along the way earns her 11th career title, 500th win, and first championship in more than three years by crushing up-and-comer Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-0. Gotta love it.

PHOTO OP: Schnyder's hair-raising run to Roland Garros quarters

Patty Schnyder is raising more than eyebrows at this French Open.

The 29-year old baller, playing in her 12th Roland Garros, equaled her best showing reaching the quarterfinals by slamming Serena Williams' conquerer Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-4. The Swiss lefty made the same round 1998 and will now face a bulldozing Ana Ivanovic for a place in the final four.

Doin' it for the older ladies - nice.

FASHION FIX: A bright tennis moment for adidas

Russian hottie (and perennial headcase) Marat Safin and Swiss Patty Schnyder are both sponsored by adidas. Though we give huge props to the sporting giant for their successful collaboration with Stella McCartney, we think they went wacky with the Crayola crayons box this season.

Color is good on the tennis court (read: white + green), but in small doses. The yellow/orange is a bit bright, particularly when someone chooses to wear the entire outfit (think: hazard sign).

LOVE IT or LEAVE IT?

Part V: Player Quotes from Wimbledon

Q. Just to clarify, you said it's all on the internet, this part, but your coach made you drink three liters of orange juice or something every day, and was your former coach stalking you and your current husband came in as a private detective to keep him away? Is that the story? What is the story?
A. That was yeah, sort of. But that's not the story you're going to read about. You're going to read about it, but it's not a big deal.

Q. But did you feel you needed a private detective or was it your parents?
A. Yeah, it was more my parents. No, it was not myself. I felt I was always in control of everything I did.

- Patty Schnyder

Q. Can I ask you what strings you use?
A. What strings? For grass I use kind of synthetic and gut, half and half.

Q. Synthetic in the mains and guts in the cross?
A. Yeah.

- Gonzo

Q. On the BBC they were claiming you might have been inspired by meeting Jonathan Ross on his talk show.
A. That's definitely provided all my inspiration to doing well in The Championships.

Q. How was that for you?
A. It was fun. He's a great guy. I had a lot of fun.

- ReRe Williams

Q. Would you say she's the best player in the game when [Serena's] playing her best, or do you think Justine is a little bit better than her?
A. It's a very close call. I would say at the moment Justine is the best player.

Q. So there's going to be no bump, no Serena slamming into you on the changeovers this time?
A. I hope not (laughing).
